I trained with Alan Chadwick at the University of
California, Santa Cruz, in 1971. I've worked in greenhouses,
managed a market farm, and for twenty years I owned
and managed a landscape design/build company, Robert
Howard Associates, Inc., in Boulder, Colorado. The company
won numerous national, state, and environmental awards
in the US. My garden designs have been published in
Sunset magazine. I wrote a book called What Makes the
Crops Rejoice, published by Little, Brown in 1986. I
taught horticulture as an adjunct professor for many
years at Naropa University in Boulder.
I love traveling and visiting gardens; reading about
gardens and garden history; designing and making gardens;
watering, making compost and contemplating the feel
of the evening air. I'm influenced by just about everything
but especially by what nature wants to do locally, by
the "head, heart and hand" motto of the Arts
and Craft movement, and by French country gardens.
Since retiring and immigrating to Nova Scotia, I've,
well
, I've put retirement behind me. I'm having
a wonderful time learning about plants, weather, stone
and soil in Nova Scotia. Mayflower Gardens is a small
garden craft company. We want to make beautiful gardens
that feel contemplative and lively.
