| About the Program
Environmental Horticulture is the
process of enhancing the spaces in which we live and work,
using good design and appropriate plants, with a strong emphasis
on environment sustainability.
The word horticulture
is derived from the Latin word hortus, meaning garden plant,
and cultura, meaning culture. Horticulture is the culture
or growing of garden plants, and has evolved over centuries
of practice into a science, an art and a business. Our environment
includes the air, water, and soil, as well as the plant and
animal life around us.
There are many practical components
to the Environmental Horticulture program. Our campus has
28 acres with over 1500 trees and shrubs, and hundreds of
herbaceous plants. This is an ideal outdoor laboratory for
training and experience in disciplines such as arboriculture,
plant identification, landscape maintenance and landscape
construction. All the instructors have experience working
in the green industry, with a wide range of expertise, to
pass on to students.
