Wendy Coolen graduated from the N.S. Agricultural
College with a diploma in Landscape Horticulture in
2003. She started her career in gardening as groundskeeper
for the Archbishop's residence in Halifax in preparation
For Pope John Paul II's visit. For the next six years
she was groundskeeper for a large convent in Charlottetown
but then returned to N.S. where she subsequently worked
for a landscape company, garden center and had her own
gardening business. After deciding that running a business
took away too much gardening time, she went to work
for Earthcraft Landscape in Bedford. It was there that
she honed her design skills and worked very closely
with the construction crew on many interesting projects.
Wanting a change, Wendy went back to school and took
a baking course which led her to work on a resort on
the south shore of N.S. But fate took over and she is
now the gardener at White Point Beach Resort.
Wendy successfully completed the Certified Horticultural
Technician (Maintenance) qualifications in 2000 and
now volunteers as a judge for the testing. She is a
member and treasurer of the Atlantic Association of
Landscape Designers.
Wendy remembers as a very small child getting her mother
to stop and look at flowers and gardens on their walks.
That love of plants and gardens has always remained.
Wendy and her partner, himself a landscaper and visual
artist, live on the south shore of N.S. and spend as
much work and leisure time as possible out of doors.
